What a Pattern Actually Changes

A layout pattern is three decisions rolled into one. It sets the cut count, which is labor: a grid cuts only at the perimeter, while a diagonal cuts every edge tile twice and herringbone cuts continuously through the field. It sets the waste allowance, which is money — the difference between ordering 110 and 132 tiles for the same floor. And it sets where the eye lands: continuous stacked joints emphasize the grid, staggered joints break it up, and diagonals pull the eye past the room's short dimension.

The Six Core Patterns

Straight / Grid (Stacked)

Tiles align in continuous rows and columns, all joints meeting at right angles. The look is clean and modern — the gallery floor — and the install is the easiest of any pattern: snap two perpendicular center lines and follow them. Waste is the lowest of any layout, typically 5–10%, because full tiles fill the field and cuts cluster at the walls. The catch is tolerance: tight, aligned joints show every variation, so grid demands rectified tile (tile ground to exact dimensions) and a flat floor. Its close cousin, the stacked vertical layout, runs the same alignment top-to-bottom instead of side-to-side — a favorite for shower walls and plank floors, with identical demands.

Running Bond (Brick Joint)

Each row offsets the last by half a tile — the brick pattern. It is the forgiving classic: staggered joints break up both the grid and any slight size variation in the tile, so a batch that runs a little large or small disappears into the stagger instead of stacking into a visible ridge. Waste runs 10–15%. The one caution is large-format tile: with any edge 15 in or more, a 50% offset places the center of each tile directly over the joint of the row below — exactly where lippage, one tile edge sitting proud of its neighbor, shows worst. Diagonal (Diamond, 45°)

The same grid, rotated 45°. Diagonal layouts add motion and famously make small rooms read bigger, because the eye follows the tile lines past the shortest wall instead of straight into it. The price is cuts: every tile along every wall is cut twice — once for the angle, once for the fit — and the triangular offcuts rarely serve another opening. Order 15–20% extra, snap your 45° lines through the room's center point before anything else, and expect the layout to take meaningfully longer than a straight set.

Herringbone

Rectangles in a 2:1 ratio — 12×24-in planks, for example — set in the classic zigzag. Herringbone carries more visual energy than anything else in this list, and it is the most exacting to lay: the pattern lives or dies on its start lines, and a one-degree error at the beginning compounds into visible drift ten feet into the field. Waste runs 15–20% and up, since the field is cut continuously. Basketweave

Basketweave reads traditional and tailor-made, especially in stone and marble looks, and it is usually sold as pre-assembled sheets, which keeps the geometry honest and the layout moderate in difficulty. Waste is moderate as well — in the 10–15% band — because the sheet does the patterning and cuts concentrate at the perimeter. It suits small bathrooms and powder rooms better than large open floors, where the weave can read busy.

Versailles / French Modular

Four tile sizes — typically a small square, a large square, and two rectangles — combined in a repeating module engineered to look like it never repeats. Versailles (also sold as French or modular pattern) comes as a bundled set: the sizes are designed to interlock, the layout is prescribed by the manufacturer's pattern map, and you buy coverage in complete modules rather than counting individual tiles. That makes the waste question mostly disappear — the set handles it — and shifts the work to following the map precisely. It is the pattern for natural stone and Old-World looks, and it punishes improvisation.

Common Mistakes

  • Running a 50% offset on large-format tile. The center of each plank lands over the joint below, where lippage shows worst — offset by one-third instead when any edge is 15 in or more.
  • Starting a pattern from the wall. Walls are rarely square; a pattern that starts off a wall drifts with it. Snap center lines and work outward.
  • Grid-setting non-rectified tile at hairline joints. The variation has nowhere to go, so the grid wanders — see tile spacing and grout joints for the joint-width math.
  • Using one waste number for every pattern. A 10% allowance that is right for a grid will strand a herringbone job three rows from the finish.
