Buying coverage = 248 × 1.10 ≈ 273 sq ft. Cartons = 273 ÷ 23.8 = 11.5 → 12 cartons.
Round up to whole cartons and note what the rounding leaves you: 12 cartons at 23.8 sq ft is 285.6 sq ft of material for 273 sq ft of need. If the number had landed just over a carton boundary - 11.05 cartons, say - the honest move is still to round up; the alternative is the Saturday-shortage scenario. First, buy every carton from the same lot number - dye lots and texture runs vary enough between production batches that a mismatched box is visible across the floor. Second, buy from a retailer with stock: the "ship in 3–5 days" listing that saves two dollars a box is the one that strands your project when you're short.
Plank Count and the Last-Row Problem
Sometimes you need pieces, not boxes - ordering a repair box years later, or buying open-stock clearance planks. Divide the buying coverage by the coverage of one plank: a standard 48-inch by 7.09-inch LVP plank covers about 2.36 sq ft, so 273 sq ft ÷ 2.36 ≈ 116 planks. The same arithmetic exposes a layout trap: measure your room width in planks before you start. If the room is 144 inches wide and planks are 7.09 inches face, that's 20.3 plank widths - meaning the final row is a 3-inch rip, and a ripped last row under 2 inches is weak, ugly and hard to fasten. Count the edge details room by room. Transitions - T-moldings at doorways, reducers where plank meets tile, baby thresholds at exterior doors - are sold per piece, and doorways are where floating floors need them most, because the floor must be free to move on both sides of the break. Manufacturers also cap continuous floating-floor runs, commonly near 40 feet of length or large room-to-room spans; the doorways conveniently provide the break points. Stairs take one stair-nose molding per tread. Baseboards are measured in linear feet around the perimeter minus doorways, sold in 8-foot lengths; if you're keeping existing base, quarter-round covers the expansion gap instead.

Inspect before you acclimate, not after: open one carton per pallet on delivery and check for damage, and confirm every carton carries the same lot number. A crushed corner discovered at hour zero is a warranty claim; the same corner discovered at hour forty is your Saturday afternoon gone.
