Our Mission

MyHouseLogic exists to give every contractor, tradesperson, and serious DIYer free access to the same accurate, code-aware material estimating math that experienced pros carry in their heads. We believe good math produces better buildings, less waste, and happier clients — and we believe that math should be available without a paywall, without a signup, and without installing an app.

The construction industry runs on relationships, reputation, and pencil-and-paper estimates scrawled on the back of a work order. That approach works fine for experienced pros who've internalized the conversion factors, yield constants, and waste multipliers over decades of practice. But it leaves out the next generation of tradespeople, the homeowner tackling their first major renovation, and the small contractor trying to bid competitively against larger firms with estimating departments. MyHouseLogic levels that playing field.

How We Build Calculators

Every calculator on MyHouseLogic follows the same editorial process. We start with the relevant industry standards — ASTM International, ANSI, TCNA Handbook, NEC, UPC, IRC — and verify every formula against published reference tables. We test each calculator against real-world projects: known pours, known sheet counts, known tile layouts. If our number doesn't match the as-built count, we fix the formula before publishing.

Each tool includes three layers of documentation beyond the calculator itself. First, a "How to Use" section explains each input field and what the results mean. Second, a "Formula" section shows the actual math so you can verify it yourself or replicate it in a spreadsheet. Third, a "Worked Example" walks through a real project end to end so you can see the calculator in context. We treat transparency as a feature, not a vulnerability — if you can't trust the math, the calculator is useless.

Editorial Independence

MyHouseLogic is reader-supported through advertising. We accept display advertising from third-party networks (Google AdSense, Mediavine, or similar) but we do not accept paid placements in our calculator results, sponsored reviews of products, or "advertorial" content disguised as editorial articles. Our calculators are math — they have no opinions and accept no sponsorships.

When we publish a long-form article that references specific products (a particular thinset brand, a type of curing compound, a model of water heater), those references are based on industry standards and common usage — not on payments from manufacturers. If we ever accept a sponsored article in the future, it will be clearly labeled as "Sponsored" or "Advertisement" at the top of the content.

Roadmap: What's Coming

MyHouseLogic launched in 2026 with five foundational calculators covering the most common residential trades: concrete, drywall, tile, paint, and landscaping materials. Our roadmap for the next 18 months includes:

  • Q1 2026: Roofing shingle and underlayment calculator (pitch-adjusted bundles).
  • Q1 2026: Hardwood and laminate flooring calculator (waste-factor by pattern).
  • Q2 2026: Deck lumber calculator (joists, beams, posts, deck boards, hardware).
  • Q2 2026: Insulation calculator (R-value, batt/loosefill, vapor barrier).
  • Q3 2026: Residential electrical service load calculator (NEC Article 220).
  • Q3 2026: Wire size and conduit fill calculators (NEC Chapter 9).
  • Q4 2026: Water heater sizing calculator (tank and tankless).
  • Q4 2026: Pipe volume and DWV sizing calculators.
  • Q1 2027: Paver and patio stone calculator.
  • Q1 2027: Irrigation design calculator (sprinkler zones, head counts).

Editorial Team

MyHouseLogic is maintained by a small editorial team with backgrounds in residential construction, civil engineering, and technical publishing. We do not publish individual author bios on every article because most of our content is collaboratively edited and reviewed by multiple team members. The "MyHouseLogic Editorial" byline represents the collective work of the team, not a single author.

When we publish articles that touch on code compliance (NEC, UPC, IRC), we have those sections reviewed by licensed professionals in the relevant trade before publication. Our reviewers are not employees of MyHouseLogic and do not endorse the site publicly — they simply verify that our code references are accurate as of the publication date.

Technology & Performance

MyHouseLogic is built as a static website using only standard HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript. We use no frameworks (React, Vue, Angular), no build tools (Vite, Webpack), no third-party scripts beyond Google Fonts (optional) and the ad network of record. Every page is delivered as raw HTML/CSS/JS, weighing under 50 KB total. Our cumulative layout shift (CLS) is 0, our largest contentful paint (LCP) is under 1 second on a 4G connection, and our total blocking time (TBT) is negligible.

This performance philosophy is intentional. Construction calculators are often used on job sites with poor cellular coverage, on older devices, and by users with limited data plans. A 5-megabyte JavaScript bundle that takes 8 seconds to load on a job site is useless. We optimize for the worst-case user — the contractor on an iPhone 8 in a basement with one bar of signal.
