Masonry is one of the oldest building trades, and the math hasn't changed — only the tools have. Below you'll find a quick reference for the standards we use across our masonry calculators, plus links to deeper guides for specific situations.

Concrete Yield Reference

  • 40 lb bag: yields approximately 0.30 cubic feet of cured concrete
  • 60 lb bag: yields approximately 0.45 cubic feet
  • 80 lb bag: yields approximately 0.60 cubic feet
  • 90 lb bag: yields approximately 0.68 cubic feet
  • 1 cubic yard: requires 60 bags of 60 lb, or 45 bags of 80 lb
  • 1 cubic meter: requires approximately 78 bags of 60 lb, or 59 bags of 80 lb

Tile & Mortar Industry Standards

  • TCNA Handbook: Tile Council of North America's specification manual — the industry bible for tile installation methods.
  • ANSI A108 / A118: American National Standards for tile installation materials and methods. A118.1 = unmodified thinset; A118.4 = modified thinset; A118.11 = polymer-modified for plywood.
  • 95% coverage rule: TCNA requires 95% thinset coverage for interior wet areas and exterior applications. Back-butter large-format tile to achieve this.
  • Grout joint minimum: 1/16" for rectified porcelain, 1/8" for standard ceramic, 1/4" for natural stone. Use unsanded grout below 1/8", sanded above.

  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = 0.7646 cubic meters
  • 1 cubic meter = 35.31 cubic feet = 1.308 cubic yards
  • 1 square foot = 0.0929 square meters
  • 1 square meter = 10.764 square feet
  • 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters = 2.54 centimeters
  • 1 foot = 0.3048 meters
