Each choice cascades through the material list and changes the budget by 20% or more. Drywall estimating in particular benefits from a calculator because of the compound relationships between sheets, screws, joint compound, and tape. Order the wrong sheet size and you'll either buy too many or run out mid-room. Underestimate joint compound and you'll make a mid-day trip to the supplier with muddy tools in the truck. Carpentry Trade Resources

Carpentry spans everything from rough framing to fine finish work, and the math differs at each end of the trade. Below is a quick reference for the standards we use across our carpentry calculators.

Drywall Thickness Standards

  • 1/4" drywall: Repair work, curved walls, skimming over existing textures. Not structural.
  • 3/8" drywall: Repair work over existing drywall. Not for new construction.
  • 1/2" drywall: Standard residential walls and ceilings on 16" o.c. framing. The default.
  • 5/8" drywall: Required for fire-rated assemblies (attached garage walls, multi-family separations) and recommended for ceilings on 24" o.c. joists to prevent sagging.
  • Type X drywall: Contains glass fibers for fire resistance. Required for 1-hour fire-rated assemblies.

Drywall Finish Levels (GA-214)

  • Level 1: Single coat of compound over tape in all joints — used for concealed areas like attics and plenums.
  • Level 2: Tape plus one coat — for utility areas, garages, behind tile.
  • Level 3: Tape plus two coats — for heavy-texture finishes.
  • Level 4: Tape plus three coats — the residential standard for flat or light-texture finishes.
  • Level 5: Full skim coat over Level 4 — required for gloss paint, critical lighting, or perfect walls.

Framing Lumber Reference

  • 2×4 (actual 1.5"×3.5"): Standard wall stud. 16" o.c. is residential standard; 24" o.c. is advanced framing (cheaper, more insulation).
  • 2×6 (actual 1.5"×5.5"): Exterior walls in cold climates (R-19+ insulation).
  • 2×8 (actual 1.5"×7.25"): Floor joists up to 12' span at 16" o.c.
  • 2×10 (actual 1.5"×9.25"): Floor joists up to 16' span at 16" o.c.
  • 2×12 (actual 1.5"×11.25"): Floor joists up to 20' span at 16" o.c.
Pro Tip

Always order 10% extra drywall sheets beyond the calculator's number. Cuts around outlets, doors, and corners generate scrap, and a single mis-cut on the last sheet means a trip to the supplier. Returns of uncut sheets are usually accepted.
