It comes from a real industry standard — GA-214, published by the Gypsum Association and aligned with ASTM C840 — that defines six levels of drywall finishing, from bare board to a full skim coat. Reading the Levels in Practice

Levels 0–2: function over appearance

The first three levels are about speed and code compliance, not looks. Level 0 is temporary board — common in phased construction where a space will be closed in later. Level 1, tape with no coat over it, exists mostly for fire and draft resistance in concealed cavities: the taped joint slows smoke and flame travel between rooms even when nobody will ever see it. Level 2 shows up in garages, mechanical rooms, and rental storage spaces. A common misconception is that Level 2 is a "bad" finish; it's simply the correct finish for spaces where anything more is wasted labor. Tiling note: in truly wet areas (showers, tub surrounds), tile belongs on cement backer board, not finished drywall — no drywall finish level makes gypsum board waterproof.

Level 3: the texture level

Level 3 adds one full coat over the tape and fastener heads. Its entire purpose is to sit under heavy texture — orange peel's rougher cousins, knockdown, or hand-applied textures that do the visual hiding themselves. The texture bridges and masks the joints, so spending labor on a smoother base buys nothing. If a wall will get a fine, light texture that reads almost smooth, most contractors bid it as Level 4 anyway, because light texture hides far less than heavy texture.

Level 4: the residential standard

Level 4 is what a homeowner means when they say "finished walls": tape embedded, then two additional coats of joint compound over every joint, inside corner, and fastener head, sanded smooth between coats. Properly executed, a Level 4 wall reads as one continuous surface under ordinary paint. It is the assumed level in most residential bids — which is exactly why it should still be written into the contract explicitly. "Level 4 finish throughout living areas" costs a bid no more to promise than to imply, and it removes the argument later.

Level 5: the skim coat

Level 5 starts with a complete Level 4 finish, then adds a thin, uniform skim coat of joint compound over the entire surface — every square foot, not just the joints. The reason is physics: joint compound absorbs paint differently than gypsum board face paper does. Under flat paint in normal light, that difference is invisible. But two conditions expose it. First, glossy paints: gloss, semi-gloss, and enamels reflect light evenly off the smooth compound but slightly differently off the paper, producing faint flat patches called photographing, where every joint and fastener ghosts through. Second, critical lighting: a large window, a hallway light at a shallow angle, or a fixture close to a ceiling washes light across the surface and turns a perfect-looking Level 4 wall into a contour map of its own joints.

Level 5 is the most expensive residential level because the skim coat is labor-intensive and unforgiving. Lighting, Texture, and the Flashlight Test

You don't need a specification to predict whether your walls will look good: you need a flashlight. After finishing (and again after priming), darken the room and hold a bright flashlight nearly parallel to the wall, so the beam rakes across the surface. Every ridge, sanding scratch, and fastener spot throws a hard shadow. This is the same geometry that a west-facing window uses at 5 p.m., so what the flashlight shows, the sun will eventually show too.

Texture changes the equation entirely. Coarse texture scatters light randomly and hides Level 3 joints completely; smooth paint does the opposite and reveals everything. Common Mistakes

  • Specifying Level 5 everywhere "to be safe." Skim-coating an entire house can add thousands of dollars for a result that flat paint never reveals. Spend Level 5 money only where gloss or critical lighting demands it.
  • Assuming the bid includes a level. Many residential bids never mention levels at all. If yours doesn't, ask — "Level 4 in living areas, Level 2 in the garage" is a one-line clarification that prevents the most common drywall dispute.
  • Painting Level 4 walls with gloss. The single most frequent cause of "my walls look blotchy" complaints. Either step the sheen down or the finish level up.
  • Judging finish under work light. Overhead work lights flatten surfaces and hide ridges. Always inspect with the flashlight test before accepting the work.
