How Much Mulch Do I Need? Depth, Coverage and Volume

Mulch is sold in two languages: cubic yards dumped off a truck at the supply yard, or two-cubic-foot bags loaded by hand at the garden center. Your bed, meanwhile, is measured in square feet, and the depth you want comes in inches. Every mulch estimate is the translation between those three units.

Step One: Measure the Bed Into Square Feet

Area comes first, and bed shape decides how you get it. Four shapes cover virtually every residential bed, and anything irregular decomposes into them. Measure in feet — mixed units cause more errors than any math that follows.

Rectangles and squares

Multiply length by width: a foundation bed 40 ft along the house and 12 ft out is 40 × 12 = 480 sq ft. In metric, 1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m — the conversion this site's calculators use — so that is about 44.6 m2.

L-shapes and composite beds

Split an L-shape into two rectangles and add: a bed wrapping a patio — 10 × 12 ft along one leg, 4 × 8 ft along the other — is 120 + 32 = 152 sq ft. Curved beds get the same treatment; the estimate lands within a bag or two of exact.

Triangles

Corner beds where two edges meet at a right angle are triangles: area is one-half the base times the height. A corner 6 ft along the fence and 4 ft along the house is ½ × 6 × 4 = 12 sq ft.

Circles and tree rings

Round beds and tree rings use the radius — center to edge, half the diameter. Area is π × r2: a ring 8 ft across has a 4-ft radius, so π × 42 ≈ 50 sq ft. Measure to the outer edge of the bed, not to the trunk.

From Area to Volume: The Depth Conversion

Depth turns the footprint into an order. Convert depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12, multiply by the area, and the result is cubic feet: volume (cu ft) = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12. Divide by 27 — 27 cu ft to the cubic yard — and you have the number the bulk supplier quotes against.

The cubic yard is the trade's unit because it is what a loader bucket and a dump truck carry; metric suppliers sell the same pile at 1 yd3 = 0.7646 m3. Bags are labeled by the cubic foot, which is why the bag math gets its own section.

A worked example, matching the calculator

A rectangular bed 10 ft by 20 ft, mulched 3 in deep:

  1. Area: 10 × 20 = 200 sq ft.
  2. Depth in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
  3. Volume: 200 × 0.25 = 50 cu ft.
  4. Cubic yards: 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 yd3.
  5. Bags: 50 ÷ 2 = 25 two-cu-ft bags.

Bag Math: The Two-Cubic-Foot Standard

The standard mulch bag holds 2 cu ft, which fixes the yard-to-bag conversion: 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5 bags per cubic yard, so a full yard means 14 bags on the receipt. Premium hardwood often comes in 1.5 cu ft bags instead — 18 to the yard — so read the bag print before doing mental math.

The field estimate is one line: bags needed = cubic feet ÷ 2, rounded up. Fifty cubic feet is 25 bags; eighteen is 9.

Pick the Depth Before Ordering

Depth is the biggest lever in the calculation — at a fixed area, going from 2 in to 4 in doubles the order. Two to three inches is the standard over bare soil: deep enough to exclude light and hold moisture, shallow enough to let water and air through. Bulk or Bagged?

Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard, delivered by truck or self-loaded at the supply yard. Bags are sold at retail, fit in a car trunk, and need no wheelbarrow — but per cubic yard they cost roughly double.

The rule of thumb: bags win on small jobs, roughly anything under a yard, where delivery fees and order minimums dwarf the material cost; bulk wins above it, with the practical break-even around 2 yards once fees are priced in. Waste, Settling, and Rounding Up

Mulch does not compact the way soil does, so settling is minor — a fresh layer knits down slightly, and that is all. The real correction runs the other way: beds measure bigger than you think, because edges wander and the mulch line usually runs past the planting line. Round up, not down.

In practice: order whole yards, and buy a bag or two extra at the store. Running short at the end of a bed is a second trip; running long is a slightly thicker layer along the back edge.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing feet and inches. The formula divides depth by 12 because depth is in inches and dimensions in feet; skipping that division orders twelve times too much.
  • Using the diameter in the circle formula. π r2 wants the radius — an 8-ft ring is r = 4, not r = 8, a fourfold error.
  • Measuring the plan, not the bed. Edges wander and beds creep wider every year. Measure the mulch line as it sits today.
  • Forgetting the old mulch. A refresh is 1–1.5 in on top of what is there, not a second full install.
  • Assuming every bag is 2 cu ft. That is the standard, but 1.5 cu ft premium bags — 18 to the yard — are common. Check the print.
  • Ordering to the decimal. Suppliers sell whole yards and stores sell whole bags: 1.85 yd3 is a 2-yard order.
  • Ignoring the delivery fee. A $30-per-yard quote with a flat delivery fee does not beat bags on a one-yard job. Price both routes.
