Practical Guides for Real Homes

Not every home project needs a contractor, a spreadsheet and three cups of coffee. These guides explain what homeowners, DIYers and property owners actually need to know — in straightforward language, with practical examples, and the calculator one click away when you're ready to run your own numbers.

The technical side is still here when you need it — every guide is checked against published industry standards (ASTM, ANSI, TCNA and IRC) and every number in a worked example matches what our calculators produce. But the plain-English answer comes first, the engineering detail second. We don't publish sponsored roundups or product listicles; every article is written to be genuinely useful before a pour, a tile layout or a paint spec.

New guides ship regularly, with roofing, kitchen and bathroom planning, and home maintenance coverage on the way. If there's a topic you want covered, tell us — reader requests shape the calendar.

A note on units

Field Guide articles are written in imperial units (feet, inches, °F, PSI, gallons) — the standard for US residential construction and the system used by ASTM, ANSI, TCNA, NEC, and IRC. Every calculator on the site supports both imperial and metric: use the Imp / Met toggle in the header to switch, and your preference is saved on this device. Key metric conversions: 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 gallon = 3.785 L, 1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m.

Estimating, mix design, thickness, reinforcement, and curing — the full concrete cluster, anchored by the Concrete Slab & Footing Calculator.

Drywall & Wall Guides

Board selection, fasteners, compound quantities, and finish levels — everything around the Drywall Sheet & Screws Estimator.

Tile & Flooring Guides

Takeoffs, layout patterns, grout, and joint width — the four guides behind the Tile Layout & Mortar Calculator.

Paint Guides

Quantities, sheen, primer, and coats — the decisions that surround the Paint & Primer Coverage Calculator.

Garden & Outdoor Guides

Volume math, depth by application, and mulch vs. stone — the guides behind the Mulch & Topsoil Bulk Estimator.

On the Way

Editorial Note

The Field Guide is intentionally narrow. We publish fewer articles than a typical home-improvement blog, but each one is meant to be the definitive reference a tradesperson can hand to a client or a junior employee. If a topic is missing, request it via the contact form — we read every message.
